Urban Views of Rural Land Management

Urban views of rural land management:
A survey of Brisbane residents
Preliminary report by
Bradd Witt, Bill Carter, Katherine Witt and Amber Gordon

What this study is about
Most land in Australia is owned and managed as private property for agricultural production. Therefore, concern about conservation is really concern for how rural lands are managed. This research explores urban people's understanding and expectations of rural land management and the people who currently manage it. It has often been quoted that there is a deepening cultural divide between rural and urban people, especially in relation to conservation and environmental issues. This research provides valuable insights into urban people's views of rural land management and the farming community.

What we did
In 2005 just over 1000 surveys were mailed out to a random sample of Brisbane residents with almost 300 completed surveys returned. We sought responses to a range of questions relating to the level of concern for land management, condition of resources, trust in government and farmers and other themes regarding rights, responsibilities and knowledge. Respondents ticked a box marked as Strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Undecided (U), Disagree (D), Strongly Disagree (SD), and Don't Know (DK) for each question. We wish to thank the respondents.
