 Edwin Cedamon - PhD candidate

Background:

I am Licensed Registered Forester from the Philippines. I had my bachelor and master’s degree in forestry specialising in forest management, agroforestry and community forestry. I have been involved in the two large ACIAR Small-scale Forestry Projects in the Philippines in last few years as Research Officer. The project entitled “Redevelopment of a Timber Industry Following Extensive Land Clearing” was implemented in 2001-2004 to understand how small-scale forestry could be promoted in the Philippines. The sequel project which commences in 2005 is titled “Improving Financial Returns to Smallholder Tree Farms in the Philippines” primarily aimed at understanding and addressing constraints faced by smallholder tree farms in improving returns from smallholder tree farms. My role in these to projects was basically assist project leaders in the day-to-day project operation and staff supervision. The following are studies I have been involved with.

  1. Survey of Forestry Attitudes and Practices in Selected Communities in Leyte province Philippines.
  2. Influence of potting technique and hardening intensity on the growth of seedlings in nursery and field condition.
  3. Measurement of Smallholder Tree farms in Leyte Island.
  4. Survey of management practices of smallholder tree farms in Leyte Island.
  5. Evaluation of reliability of village-based inventory of smallholder tree farms in Leyte Island.
  6. Survey of timber entrepreneurs in Leyte, Samar, Biliran and Cebu Philippines.

Study Area: Managing the Natural Environment

Project Title: Modeling Market of Smallholder Tree Farms in Leyte Island, Philippines

Project outline: Tree planting and tree farming has been promoted by various government programs in the Philippines over the last two decades. In Leyte Island, trees had been planted on farms for many reasons e.g. timber for on-farm use and house construction by smallholders, for sale and for other purposes including shade for homesteads and crops and as a legacy for future generations. It has been found however that tree farmers are experiencing problems on marketing their tree products, in particular there is a lack of information on timber prices and where and how to market them. In addition, timber entrepreneurs and processors are experiencing shortage of local timber supply for their businesses. In this project, a market model based on linear programming (LP) will be developed to examine production and marketing of tree products in Leyte Island. Economic benefits of silviculture (pruning and thinning), sale in new markets, and availability of value adding facility will be evaluated. Marketing strategy, policy and extension initiatives to improve timber marketing will then be formulated. An understanding of the market factors, i.e. product specification demanded by the timber entrepreneurs, will be useful by farmers in applying silvicultural treatments and developing management regime to be able to produce products demanded by the market. In addition, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and local government units (LGU), at the province and municipal level, will likely to benefit from this project in terms of developing policies and programs related to all forms of forestry based activities, e.g. agroforestry, community forestry, private tree farms and plantation, and even industrial forest plantations.
