 Agribusiness

What is Agribusiness?

Agribusiness is about delivering food and fibre products to global customers. It is a major part of the Australian economy in terms of the value of production and employment opportunities.

Agribusiness firms play an important role in the economy because they:
  • create innovative, value-for-money food and fibre products for consumers in Australia and internationally
  • employ specialist professionals in areas such as finance, marketing, logistics and supply chain management
  • provide world class inputs such as chemicals, fertiliser, machinery and advisory services for other businesses in the supply chain, and
  • commercialise new biotechnologies and information technologies in the production and marketing of food and fibre products.

For Australian agribusiness to remain successful, it needs graduates who are internationally orientated, consumer focused, commercially aware, technically competent and innovative.

What Graduates and Employers Say About Our Agribusiness Programs

Both graduates and employers have been lavish in their praise of the Agribusiness programs. The following quotations illustrate:

  • “The ‘hands on’ business experience has prepared me for the real world and gave me confidence and a point of difference when applying for this job.” (Daniel Elder, graduated 2006)
  • “I would recommend this course to anyone. In my current role I have drawn on the experiences the degree gave me almost every day. I feel confident that I can speak to people within any industry intelligently about issues that they face. I also feel confident that I can tackle any new challenge I may face.” (Karl Gygar, graduated 2006)
  • I left university with practical experience on an international scale which is difficult for other graduates to duplicate, thus making my skill set very competitive. (Julie Moore, graduated 2006)
  • “Queensland Cotton has partnered with the UQ Agribusiness program from day one. We have provided an International Student Exchange Scholarship and have used final semester students to carry out overseas market research for us. In return the company has been able to employ a steady stream of business-ready graduates who have made an exceptional contribution. We highly value your innovative approach to business education.”  ( Bob Dall’alba, International Marketing Manager, Queensland Cotton)
  • It is with great respect that I congratulate you and the Gatton faculty on the Agribusiness course we at Piñata were involved with.  Well done and keep up the fantastic work, our industry needs you.”  (Gavin Scurr, CEO Pinata Marketing, Queensland Primary Industry Achiever of the Year)
