Postgraduate Research
Programs
Research
Masters - Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
Research Masters students undertake an original and significant
research project, usually over a period of one to two years full-time
or two to four years part-time.
Admission requires a bachelor's degree with honours, although students
may be admitted after completing a postgraduate diploma or masters
qualifying course.
However, prospective candidates not meeting these requirements
but with significant professional experience subsequent to completing
a Bachelor's degree are invited to discuss their situation with
the Research of Postgraduate Coordinator.
PhD degrees - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Students undertake an original and significant research project.
The PhD fosters the development of an original researcher whose
work will be valuable to their discipline.
Entry to a PhD degree normally requires a four year degree with
honours at the level of either First Class or Second Class Division
One. Other qualifications may be considered for entry. Candidates
may also transfer from a research masters program with credit for
completed work.
A full time candidate should aim to submit a thesis for examination
in three to four years, part time candidates in five to six years.
With special approval, part of a PhD candidature may be taken
off shore.
Research students who are Australian citizens or permanent residents
normally receive a HECS scholarship, which pays tuition fees.
Students holding First Class Honours or equivalent are eligible
to apply for APA scholarships and UQPRS scholarships, which provide
a living allowance. These scholarships are highly competitive. Further
information on these and other scholarships are available on the
UQ website. www.uq.edu.au/research/grad-school
Students wishing to consider a research degree (either masters
or PhD) should discuss their situation with the Research of Postgraduate
Coordinator within the School. Research topics are usually determined
through consultation between the prospective student and supervising
staff.
