The role of Academic Advisors

Academic Advisors are located within each of the five schools in the Faculty of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Veterinary Science. They provide a link between the faculty, school and students in matters of academic administration. Their specific role is to:

  • be involved in program promotion/information distribution for both prospective and current students
  • provide advice to the relevant Director of Studies regarding credits, recognition of prior learning and exemptions
  • counsel students on career opportunities
  • overview student workload and progress
  • identify and provide academic counseling to students believed to be ‘at risk’
  • consult with Heads of Schools regarding course issues as necessary
  • provide a written report to the relevant Director of Studies and Heads of Schools at least once each year regarding program implementation and the progress of students, including any recommendations for action. Note that specific proposals for curriculum change will normally be submitted by Heads of Schools to the relevant Director of Studies for appropriate review and processing
  • consult with the relevant Director of Studies regarding waiving of program rules (e.g. # for progression, maximum # per semester, alternate course choices for elective and/or core courses)
  • provide advice to students regarding program plans to meet student needs/complete program requirements (any written advice to be approved by relevant Director of Studies/Deputy Director of Studies and lodged on central student files)
